Can I get a fire safety check of my home?
Many local fire services offer a free Safe and Well check (previously known as a Home fire safety visit or Home fire risk assessment). During the visit they will assess your home and offer advice on how to make it safer and you may qualify for a free smoke alarm/s.
These visits are usually for people regarded as having a higher risk of fire in the home, such as:
- Older people living alone
- People with mobility, vision or hearing impairments
- People accessing mental health services
- Those liable to intoxication through alcohol and/or drug use
Visits shouldn't last more than a few minutes and could significantly help prevent fires. Your local fire and rescue service will regularly advertise Safe and Well visits through the media, but you can book one by contacting your local fire and rescue service direct.
