Do you have any suggestions for care home activities for older people with sight loss?
Many of the activities listed below are suitable for people with sight loss or can be made suitable with minor adaptions.
Reading and Listening
- Sign your residents up to our Talking Book service, please see How do I join RNIB's libraries (Talking Books and Braille books)?
- Do group reading sessions or create a book club
Arts and Crafts
- Tactile arts and crafts such as modelling (plasticine, clay or paper mache), collages, mosaics are best
Games, Quizzes and Talks
- Invite guest speakers to the home, or get residents to share experiences they have had during their lives, did they have an interesting or unusual job? did they know anyone famous? how do they feel life has changed since they were young? etc.
- Board and card games can be adapted by purchasing lager print or audio versions.
- Crosswords and puzzle books (large print or filled in by a volunteer)
- Guess the sounds quiz
Exercise, Movement and Wellbeing
- This can range from trips out, to armchair aerobics, dancing, yoga etc (you just need to be more descriptive when explaining the actions)
- Meditation or hand massages
