What is an eBook and are eBooks accessible to blind and partially sighted people?
An eBook is an electronic version of a book and can be read using an eBook reader such as a Kindle, Kobo or Nook or using an eBook application on a computer, mobile phone or tablet such as an iPad. You can get eBooks in large print, braille or audio.
How easily you can see or listen to an eBook depends on what device you use to read it:
- all eBook readers and apps allow you to alter the size of the font or zoom in to see the text more easily
- some devices have text-to-speech features built in, so that the device reads out the content of the book to you using synthetic speech
- an increasing number of apps allow people to connect a braille display to the device.
