What is Uber and how can I use it?
Uber is a taxi service that operates in over 10,000 cities worldwide, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Various vehicles are available, from shared car options (Uber Pool) which brings together people travelling in the same direction as you, to a selection of personal choices such as Uber X (a standard hatchback or saloon vehicle).
If you use the Uber app, you can order a taxi directly to your location or get a fare estimate if you want to check the price of your journey in advance. The app will also show you your driver's contact details and car information, including a map of how far away they are. You can also share your journey with a friend or family member through the app, which sends a text message directly to them so that they can ensure you have arrived safely at your destination. Drivers and passengers can rate each other after the journey has been completed and all drivers are regulated by their work authority.
They also have a range of options for disabled passengers in the form of Access and Assist. This makes sure those with additional support needs can be accommodated by drivers who are disability aware and have received specialist training.
Not all options are available in all cities, so check before you book. Further information can be found on the Uber website.
The Uber app has been tested and is fully compatible with assistive technologies such as VoiceOver and Talkback.
