How can I make payments using an app on my smartphone?
If you have a smartphone, tablet or smartwatch, you can use a payment app to make electronic payments for goods and services. Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay are among the most used services, all are supported by major UK banks. You can set up your credit/debit card for contactless use through your smartphone, it will ask you to add your card details by taking a photo of your card, your bank will then send a verification code via a text message or phone call.
Transactions can then be made up to the value of £100 using the phones fingerprint sensor or facial recognition (iPhones only) as security, meaning no PIN is needed. For transactions over £100, you will be required to enter your PIN. The ability to use contactless payment is available in all high street shops and supermarkets.
There are other payment services available such as PayPal and Skrill, these services allow you to make purchases, manage accounts and transfer money (local and international).
