I’ve started receiving Universal Credit. What happens now that I’ve become a Carer?
Universal Credit contains something called the Carer Element, which is worth an extra £198.31 per month. This can be included in your Universal Credit 'maximum amount'. The rules on receiving the Carer Element are largely the same as Carer’s Allowance (CSP in Scotland).
However, the UC Carer Element can be awarded even if you are working full-time, as well as caring. There are no earnings limits on the UC Carer Element either. You do not need to actually make a claim for Carer’s Allowance (CSP in Scotland), or have underlying entitlement, before being able to get the element.
Please note - if you claim this for someone who receives the severe disability premium on another benefit, they will lose this premium.
