What is Relay (UK)?
Relay UK, previously Next Generation Text Service (NGTS), helps people with hearing loss and/or a speech impairment to use the telephone and can be accessed using a smartphone, tablet or computer. A relay assistant acts as an intermediary to convert speech to text and vice versa for the two people in conversation.
You can link a TextNumber, which looks like a standard phone number, to your home, work or mobile number. When someone dials the TextNumber the call is automatically connected to Relay UK. You can also use the service when abroad.
If you have some hearing you can have a voice conversation with the added back-up of text in case you miss something. If you cannot hear, but can use your voice, you can speak directly to the other person while the app displays the other person's speech as text, transcribed by the relay assistant.
Charges in addition to your standard rate will apply where a relay assistant is used.
Further information including an app that you can download can be found on the Relay UK website. You can also contact them directly:
