What is Blepharitis?
Belpharitis is quite common and can result in red swollen eye lids, your eye feeling itchy or irritable like you have something in it, or may experience a stinging or burning sensation. Belpharitis often results in crusty flakes around the base of your eyelashes. There are two types of belpharitis:
Anterior blepharitis - which affects the outside of your eye, where your eyelashes attach to your eyelid.
Posterior blepharitis - which affects the outside of the inner edge of the eyelid — the part that touches your eye.
Blepharitis usually occurs when you have too much bacteria at the base of your eyelashes. You can also get blepharitis if the oil glands in your eyelids get clogged or irritated.
You can keep belpharitis under control by regularly cleaning away any crusts that form. Further information including the causes of belpharitis and tips for cleaning your eyelids can be found on the National Eye Institute website.
